The citizens of Aphroditus are known for their love of knowledge and philosophy, as well as their pearls. They relied on other city states for meats, cheese, milk, poultry, and wool because they didn't have as much of those resources as the inland city states did. Aphroditus was allied with the city states that were landlocked, such as Mystras and Mycenae. They formed an alliance because they had a steady trade between those city states of goods; such as meats, dairy products, and textiles. In exchange, they traded fish, shrimp, and lobster since the inland states didn't have as easy access to those materials. Also, they had a rivalry with Athens over the fact that Aphroditus allowed women to go be educated, and the Athenians believed that women should not have that privilege. In Aphroditus, there were no very hostile relationships between them and other city states. However, there were city states that Aphroditus preferred over others. Aphroditus was not to fond of Sparta because they did not believe in the need for such a huge military, that life should be spent happily. Although, they continued trade with Sparta because they did not want to provoke Sparta's enormous, well-trained army On the other hand, Aphroditus had their best relations with inland cities because Aphroditus needed to be friends with them in order to trade with them. Plus, most of their trade was done with inland city states because Aphroditus had seafood and other ocean products the inland city states did not have and the inland city states had items to trade in return that Aphroditus did not have. Also, inland city states specialized more in army than Aphroditus did. It was wise for Aphroditus to have that relationship provided the fact that Aphroditus's military specialized in navy because the majority of Aphroditus's borders were on the ocean.
